Start Early and Stay Organized
Packing is one of the biggest sources of moving stress. In the San Fernando Valley, where summer temperatures regularly climb into the 90s and 100s, starting early also protects heat-sensitive items and gives you time to work during cooler parts of the day.
Begin at least 3–4 weeks before your move date for a typical apartment or home. Sort room by room, decide what to keep, donate, or discard, and pack non-essentials first.
Essential Packing Supplies
- Sturdy boxes in a mix of sizes (small for heavy items, medium for most household goods)
- Packing tape and a tape dispenser
- Bubble wrap, packing paper, or clean towels and clothing for cushioning
- Markers and labels
- Mattress bags and furniture pads if you are wrapping larger pieces yourself

Pack Room by Room and Label Clearly
Never mix items from different rooms in the same box. Label every box on multiple sides with the destination room and a short description of contents (for example, “Kitchen – dishes and glasses”). This makes unloading faster and reduces the chance of items ending up in the wrong place.
Color-coding by room with colored tape or stickers works well for larger moves.
Protect Fragile Items and Heat-Sensitive Belongings
Wrap dishes, glasses, and electronics carefully. Pack plates vertically (like records) rather than stacked flat. Use extra padding and mark boxes “Fragile.”
In the Valley heat, keep electronics, artwork, vinyl records, candles, plants, and medications out of direct sun and hot truck walls when possible. Transport especially sensitive items in your air-conditioned vehicle if you can.
Create an “Open First” Box
Pack a clearly labeled box or bag with items you will need right away: toiletries, medications, chargers, a change of clothes, basic kitchen supplies, important documents, and keys. Keep this with you or load it last so it is unloaded first.
